Penobscot River Atlantic salmon count data from the trap at Veazie Dam Maine's anadromous Atlantic salmon have a unique life cycle. Unlike landlocked Atlantic salmon they spend most of their life in the ocean only returning to fresh water rivers to spawn, and unlike Pacific salmon, anadromous Atlantic salmon can spawn multiple times and live to be 15 years old. Although the Penobscot River anadromous Atlantic salmon run is by far the largest run in the US, it was listed as federally endangered along with the rest of the anadromous Atlantic salmon in the Gulf of Maine in 2009.
