POETRY by PAUL AVERILL LIEBOW

BIOGRAPHY

Poet and retired Emergency Physician Paul Averill Liebow served as an Emergency Department Attending Physician at Eastern Maine Medical Center for 30 years. The recipient of numerous medical and civic awards, Liebow lives by the Penobscot River in Bucksport and is an Ambassador to the Penobscot River Restoration Project. His honors include an award for lifetime contribution to Maine EMS Region 4 (May 2007), Governor's Award: Outstanding Maine EMS Medical Director (1989), and Maine Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) Activist of the Year (2004). He participated on the Climate Change Stake-holder's Group, Subcommittee on Energy and Solid waste and the Medical Direction and Practice Board of Maine EMS 1988 to present, helping to write all four editions of the MEMS Protocols.

Other volunteer efforts related to environmental issues include fundraising for the Great Pond Mountain Trust, and serving as board member of the Natural Resources Council of Maine (1997 to 2005- Vice President 2003-2004, National Advisory Board 2006-present). He is a founding member of State Taxpayers Opposed to Pollution in 1988, which eventually evolved into the Coalition for Sensible Energy. His love and care for the environment is reflected in various OpEds and Letters to the Editor to various Maine newspapers, participation in press conferences, testimony to the Maine State Legislature and twice before the Environmental Protection Agency, once with his daughter Sarah in Boston on her 13th birthday, on the relation of air quality to our health.
